OUR
STORY

Founded in Israel in 1920, WIZO came to Australia in 1935, with the establishment of the first group in Melbourne, followed a year later by Sydney. Soon after that, the Australian WIZO Federation came into being. Australian women Zionists actively began undertaking fundraising for child welfare work in Israel. The movement continued to grow and thrive. During the war years, WIZO focused on the plight of European Jewry. Many refugees from war torn Europe travelled to Australia to make it their home and  formed the basis of the most committed WIZO women throughout Australia.

WIZO Australia is currently represented in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, with over 4,000 members to date.

WIZO QUEENSLAND

WIZO Queensland was established in Brisbane, in 1959. The first State President was Mrs. Jess Hoffman. She was voted in unanimously. In 2018, Jess's daughter, Mrs. Pam Huppert, went on to become Queensland State President. She is our immediate past president.

All our workers are volunteers and all donations go to our Israel projects.

The work of WIZO is not to just deal with the current needs of war-torn Israelis, but to be ready for what is to come. This is the legacy of WIZO - established in Israel in 1920, before the Holocaust and before the rebirth of the Jewish state. The words of the prophets were known - a great return to our land was imminent, as was a great backlash from those who wished to destroy us. WIZO was there in 1948 and we are there now.

We encourage all to stand with us in facilitating our current project and also for what is to come.

OUR
2026
PROJECT

WIZO Queensland's current project for 2026, focuses on Therapeutic Aid for Women and Children Affected by the War in Israel.

This initiative provides immediate therapeutic assistance to women and children facing acute vulnerability and crisis.

As a result of the Gaza massacre and kidnappings, PTSD has risen to 30%, depression to 45% and anxiety to 43%. Israel is experiencing collective trauma – men, women and children. But the wars against Israel continue, as we face those who seek to destroy us.

In 538 B.C.E. Cyrus the Great freed the Jews of Persia. In 2026, on 28th February, the Ayatollah Khamenei was eliminated and Israel returned the favour to ancient Persia (Iran). This war will take a great toll on Israel and we must be prepared.
